Description

  • Windcast Z, X & S
  • New shape, new look and new performance. As the name suggests the Windcast family are fast, distance casting reels that will serve a broad variety of fishing styles. All models utilise the same spool taper and deliver high speed line release for distance casting. A feature also enhanced by the travelling line guard. The Z is a dream to use. It features no less than eight smooth running CRBBs and the same wishbone handle of the Basiair. The X and Z have the valued QD quick drag function allowing big fish anglers to operate between ‘free spool’ and the drag engaged with less than one turn of the drag knob. All three choices also come fitted with the High Impact HIP clip. A built in cushion on the pin ensures forgiving but secure line location, letting you cast on the button every time. Also available is a Long Distance 5000LD model in each range. The big capacity option is designed for anglers who may row out baits beyond casting range. Other top features such as AirBail, DIGIGEAR and CastLock come as standard ensuring that every Windcast will blow you away with its performance.

Daiwa has proved that classy-looking distance casting reels do not have to cost the earth with the recent launch of its Windcast X reel. This model is the middle offering of three new models for 2010, and has an RRP of £149.99, making it excellent value for money. As with all Windcast reels, the X features Daiwas QD Quick Drag which enables the reel to be adjusted from free spool mode to the desired drag setting in less than one turn of the knob. Inside the reel you will find five corrosion-resistant ball-bearings to ensure a smooth retrieve, and it also benefits from the usual Daiwa features such as AirBail, Twist Buster, DIGIGEAR and a Lifetime Bail Spring. You can get this reel in two sizes. The X5000 will hold 370m of 15lb line and the larger X5500 can swallow 440m of 15lb mono. The first is also available in a Long Distance (LD) version for anglers who row their baits out beyond casting range

Ive been trying out Daiwas mid-priced reel in the Windcast range, the X. Its a good-looking bit of kit, not quite as bling as its more expensive brother, the Z, but still shiny enough for the tackle magpies out there. It might seem a waste, but its currently filling the role of a spod reel, which is something it does extremely well. With five ball bearings and Daiwas robust Digigear, the Windcast X is more than up to the strain that a reel is subjected to when baiting at range. In use its a smooth performer with a nice, fast retrieve and superb line lay. The reel has a couple of features that I really like. The cushioned, high-impact line clip is perfect for taking the strain of repeatedly hitting it with a loaded spod or heavy lead. Its robust, kind on the line and there are no worries about it not being up to the job. Additionally, the bail arm locks open when casting, and you actually have to close it manually. This means that its impossible for it to close accidentally, causing a crack-off. Other notable attributes include a massive tapered spool designed for distance fishing and the inclusion of the QD function, which enables the drag to be fully engaged with less than one turn of the drag knob. Another bonus is the inclusion of a forged spare spool, which is something that can be an expensive extra on some reels.
