Description

  • Windcast Z, X & S
  • New shape, new look and new performance. As the name suggests the Windcast family are fast, distance casting reels that will serve a broad variety of fishing styles. All models utilise the same spool taper and deliver high speed line release for distance casting. A feature also enhanced by the travelling line guard. The Z is a dream to use. It features no less than eight smooth running CRBBs and the same wishbone handle of the Basiair. The X and Z have the valued QD quick drag function allowing big fish anglers to operate between ‘free spool’ and the drag engaged with less than one turn of the drag knob. All three choices also come fitted with the High Impact HIP clip. A built in cushion on the pin ensures forgiving but secure line location, letting you cast on the button every time. Also available is a Long Distance 5000LD model in each range. The big capacity option is designed for anglers who may row out baits beyond casting range. Other top features such as AirBail, DIGIGEAR and CastLock come as standard ensuring that every Windcast will blow you away with its performance.

About three years ago I decided that I wanted a set of reels that were not too big but would give me a bit more range when required. In the end I opted for the Daiwa Windcast 5500Zs because they ticked all the boxes. They weren’t too big or heavy, the two spools that came with them hold more than enough line – 440 yards of 15lb – and the line lay is superb. I bought a set of three and have been impressed ever since. The front drag is very smooth and only needs a quarter turn to release it from full on to free enough to give line on a take. They also look great and give the impression of a much more expensive reel. My kit really gets used and abused. I don’t spend lots of time looking after it like I should, but these reels have been a good workhorse. They have performed admirably, even in some dire conditions – especially in France during winter. However, this winter I felt that they were starting to feel a bit tight. This was mostly due to the weather conditions; it was freezing. Although the lakes didn’t freeze there was a wind-chill factor of minus 8ºC. When I returned from France I sent the reels to Daiwa to have them serviced. They were promptly returned and were like brand new. They also came with a useful tip from the service lads. When you stop fishing it is advisable to loosen your clutch. This eases the stress on it and will increase its performance. If you own Daiwa reels I highly recommend that you take advantage of this brilliant service, which the company offers on most of its reels. To sum up, the Windcast 5500Zs are sensibly priced and look and perform like reels that costs much more. Yes, if I fished regularly at extreme distances there are reels available that could do the job better but until I do I will continue to use these excellent bits of kit.

I have a habit of breaking tackle so I prefer strong, robust reels that can withstand a bit of abuse. There are a variety of top-end reels on the market that weigh next to nothing and boast a hefty price tag. I could not trust myself with such reels because I reckon I would end up breaking them. The Windcasts look great and perform well but also feel like they can withstand anything I throw at them. They possess an excellent clutch and line peels from the spool effortlessly when casting at range. They look the part and a few people have mistaken them for Daiwa Basiairs, a reel that costs more than double their price! The quality and performance offers value for money, especially considering that some reels in the same class cost twice the price.

Imagine a sexy-looking car packed with features that many are going to want the second that they lay eyes on them, even though they could never afford the astronomical price tag. Now imagine the diesel version, retaining the looks but with added power and strength and, importantly, for less than half the price. Im not really talking cars here, but reels. The former, of course, is the drop-dead gorgeous Basiair; the latter is the desirable Windcast Z, each from Daiwa. These babies look the absolute dogs danglies and perform extremely well, while at the same time giving a solid feel of reliability that so many of the lightweight, top-end reels simply do not boast. I never blind people with science when it comes to technical spec on products, but trust me when I say that these reels have it all and then some. If there is a fault, it is that they wobble slightly on the retrieve and it took me quite some time fiddling with the removable internal washers beneath the spool before I achieved a satisfactory line lay. That apart, the Windcasts are very impressive indeed.
