Description
- For accuracy and distance the most important element of your cast is holding down the line until the power stroke is complete. Its not easy and can be very painful without some mechanical device. The most popular is the Breakaway Cannon an original concept of Mr Alfred Priestleys.
- The Cannon is mounted under the rod in line with the rings and as near to directly over the spool. Unfortunately there is a wide variety of reels and reel fittings and many vary as to how they are fitted. Attach the Cannon onto the rod with insulating tape until you are happy with its position.
- Always check that your clutch is tight before casting in areas where big fish are regularly caught winding your leader around the Cannon three times will allow you to cast with a light clutch fitting.

I have seen various mixed reviews about this or similar products, but I thought I'd give it a go. When casting any reasonable distance, I always use a 60lb shock leader tied to my usual 15lb mainline. The knot, no matter how carefully tied is always substantial enough to nick your finger if you happen to have it in contact with the line as it leaves the spool.
The Cannon is such a simple device that eliminates any contact with the wretched leader knot! Mounting it on your rod is easy (using some electrical tape to help secure it is recommended) and using it is easier still. All you're doing is using the device to replace the finger you use to hold the line as you wind up the cast. The casting action remains the same, but you have more confidence to put a little more 'oomph' into it. I've read some peoples reports that it takes a little getting used to but I found it very natural from the very first go. My distance has improved and my fingers are cut-free.
One note is that setting your line into the device can be be a bit of a faff but after a bit of practice becomes second nature.
From my own personal experience I find this to be a great little device and one I'd recommend.
