Sometimes a new product arrives on my desk that makes me stop everything I am doing to take a long, hard look at it. Such was the case with this hooklength box from MAP.
This is a box that really does take hooklength storage to another level. It holds up to, wait for it, 1,200 pre-tied hooks and I do wonder whether anybody will ever fill theirs. It can also accommodate up to 80 different lengths of hooklength between two inches and three feet.
Yes, I have to say Mike Robinson, the MAP guru who came up with the concept, has thought of everything. Here are just a few of its features:
Theres a huge variety of hooklength options available thanks to slotted foam that holds the line at roughly one-inch intervals. The foam grips the line without having to stretch it to reach a pin.
The measuring device in the lid can be adjusted and features a metal pin that allows you to tie exactly the same length of hooklength every time.
Theres plenty of room at both ends of the box to allow for hair rigs.
The base of the box can be written on with a fine-tipped pen for instant hooklength identification.
The box is double-sided, with two clear plastic lids that make hook identification a doddle.
The clear plastic lids are UV resistant, meaning no sun damage to your line.
All of these features make for the most comprehensive hooklength storage system ever produced, and I see it being an instant hit, especially with match anglers who need to be able to cater for every hooklength eventuality, choosing and changing in seconds so as not to waste any time during a competition. Pleasure anglers would also benefit from its huge capacity, but whether they will have the time or inclination to fill it is another matter.
For my part, mine has started to fill, slowly but surely, and I soon ironed out a couple of minor early issues I had with it. For example, if the metal pin on the measuring device is in the wrong position, the lids wont close. I also had to buy a pen with a tip that was fine enough to write in the limited space between each hooklength.
These small problems aside, I am very impressed with the MAP Hooklength Box. Mind you, its ruined my social life as Im determined to fill it, and that means hours and hours in the kitchen tying hooks.
