Description

The Daiwa Millionaire 7HT MAG, Magnetism like you will never have seen before with Daiwa's Magnofuge control system able to adjust itself during the cast giving you the ultimate form of brake control. Allowing the spool to hit maximum speed at the beginning of the cast, Magnofuge kicks in almost instantly. As the reel detects the centrifugal force of the spool reducing, it activates minute and gradual adjustment to the magnetic resistance, but in perfect synchronisation with the speed of the spool. Straight from the box the 7HT is cast ready and thanks to the wind range of magnetic settings available through easy grip CNC machined dial, you can tailor the range to suit any condition. Offering a swift ratio of 5.8:1, six ball bearings of which five are CRBB's and an improved handle size and grip.

I loaded my reel with 0.35mm 15lb line kept it a 1mm or so from fully loaded. For my 1st cast I set the mag setting to Max. I gave it a full pendulum cast and emptied a good lot of line off the reel. Immediately I loved this reel, with no overrun what so ever, I kept lowing the mag setting, casting further each time, even on low settings I've never had a "birds nest." Sticking to a 5oz lead, whether with big bait or small it hasn't let me down at all. The power handle is comfortable to use and makes reeling in effortless and smooth, with a fast retrieve 5.8:1 reeling the big fish through the surf is an easy task, the drag system too is also smooth and powerful. The whole reel feels strong and substantial. I am very pleased with my purchase 5 stars. Fast delivery too.

Very smooth and tough reel that seems like it will stand the test of time. If it is out and out speed your after, go for an Abu, but if you like the Japanese feel then this is the one for you. You need to re train yourself if you are used to 'thumbing' during a cast as this sends the 'Magnofuge' into complete melt down resulting in birdies, so just let the reel do it's thing until splashdown. Drag is awsome and retrieve is a good middle ground between power and speed. I recommend running the bearings without oiling for first few session as they seem to be over oiled from the box.

I'm a big fan of the original 7HT so I was keen to see how this latest offering compared to the old one. It certainly looks smart in its blue-and-gold livery and I particularly like the new power handle, which makes it much easier to hold with its rubberised grip. The line capacity is slightly less than the original but the retrieve is a little faster at 5.8:1, whereas the old one was 5.3:1. I've always preferred to run my fishing reels on the side of safety to avoid overruns and crack-offs, and this new Magnofuge system certainly seems to work. The magnetic adjustment is easy to operate via the knob on the left-hand side plate, from 1 (minimum) to 9 (maximum). For most fishing sessions I had the setting on number 6 but took it down to 3 for the full 'Stig' treatment and didn't blow it up. I loaded the reel with 0.35mm line that I normally use for general shore fishing, keeping it about 2mm to 3mm down from completely full. I'm not sure how many metres this made but there was plenty for a normal fishing session. I managed to drag my brother down on one session to take the photos and gave it the full pendulum. After the cast he said two words, the second of which was "sake" - I'll let you guess the first. From the photo you can see how much line was left on the spool, which wasn't much, and there was no line lift - only arm ache when I wound in! I certainly couldn't complain about the distances that I could fish at. However, the only thing that, in my opinion, let the reel down was the clutch. Where I fished there was weed and, after enough gathered on the line to break the lead out, I had to reel in. It was then that I realised that the clutch really struggled and, on occasions, I had to thumb the spool as I lifted and wound because the clutch had a tendency to slip. The drag doesn't lock up like on the Turbo and the original, and whether it was just the particular reel I tried I'm not sure, but on the whole it's a superb piece of kit!

I noticed straightaway that the big single power handle is ideal for winching fish up the beach and out of the surf. It has a very smooth, seven-disc drag system that will help you avoid breaking off when you have a decent fish on. The magnetic-adjustment knob is on the left-hand side plate and the settings are numbered from 1 to10; this can be fine-tuned by half-increments to suit the angler's fishing or casting ability. It runs smoothly on five corrosion-resistant ball bearings and one stainless-steel ball bearing. It also has a super-lightweight, machined, Duralumin spool that has a capacity of 300 metres of 0.35mm mono. For fishing and testing I loaded the reel with 0.35mm Sufix Tritanium, 80lb Sufix shockleader and teamed it with my Century Kompressor SS with the reel mounted low. It was a blustery day so I opted for a 170g Breakaway impact lead with a clipped-down pulley rig loaded with a couple of black lug. Because of the conditions I decided that a pendulum cast was the best technique and gave it a good hit. As the rig flew through the air I was impressed with the way the magnets controlled the spool revs; the magnetic control self-adjusts with centrifugal force - what a clever idea. I found it to be an excellent fishing and casting reel with its gear ratio of 5.8.1, which is very useful when you fish over rough ground. After a few trips out I had the magnetic settings sussed and when the wind is behind me I can hit great distances without worrying about overruns. This is just what I need when I'm fishing a match, as the last thing I want is to be sorting out an overrun or crack-off and wasting precious fishing time.
